THE SONG COMPANY – FULLNESS OF JOY

Filmed at St Mary’s Cathedral Crypt on  Saturday 19 November, the Nielson, ACO Pier 2/3  on Sunday 20 November and streamed by the Australian Digital Concert Hall on 15 December as part of the 2022 Higher Ground season, the latest Song Company concert celebrated Antony Pitts in his last concert as Director of the Song Company after seven years.

The complex, multi layered and precisely structured music was given a lustrous performance by the artists of The Song Company along with The SongCo Apprentices and The SongCo Chorale, passionately and eloquently presented. Pitts conducted most enthusiastically and dynamically.

The concert was bookended with music by Thomas Tallis as well as other early choral works and also includes three works by living composers.

At times, the Company was crowded standing on the stage floor, with soloists up top in the balcony.
The concert included Psalm 33 – Ye just men, have fullie joye in the Lord, a song of exultation by David Yardley, who has set the text attributed to John Wycliffe in neo-medieval style.

Sections of Tallis’ mass Missa Puer natus est nobis were interspersed with his Suscipe quaeso Domine, regarded as one of the keystone musical works of 16th-century England performed as octets not septets. The vibrant, opulent sound produced intricately flowing melodies and harmonies at times creating dauntless suspense.

Also included were Brooke Shelley’s Tanquam sydus matutinum, inspired by the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela ,and Panis Angelicus by Tallis’ Portuguese contemporary, João Lourenço Rebelo, another luxurious piece of mellifluous writing.

Pitt’s Requiem for the Time of the End – in Paradisium shimmered.

At times, the various works have interweaving voices, or a question and answer circular discussion, or ebb, ripple and flow with complex repeated melodies.

A very adroit and virtuoso concert of Renaissance polyphony and related modern works. The music and voices were burnished and compelling.
